    Foreshadowing

Foreshadowing is when the author hints at things that are to come later in the story. In this line, the author is hinting that thing for the people of Nome will not go well. He uses the word unfortunately and states that the people "would not be that lucky." This all indicates that things are going to go the opposite of lucky and fortunate.
