Read the following passage:

That infernal automobile simply refused to budge. I slammed down the gas once again and succeeded only in forcing the wheels deeper into the voracious mud. My knuckles turned white as I grasped the steering wheel in frustration.

    An aggravated tone means one of annoyance or exasperation. Reading through, succeeded and deeper so not seem to cause an annoyance. Voracious is describing the mud, so not really contributing to the aggravation. Infernal is again describing the automobile, as is refused, so the only words that are really creating the tone is forcing and grasping.
