    A closed syllable is one that ends with a consonant. The consonants are: B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Z and sometimes Y. Other words that have closed syllables are car, yes, dog, cat, man, ball, hot, ape, and dress.

    An open syllable is one that ends with a vowel sound. Examples of open syllables are go, to, neigh, see, I, boo. Keep in mind that words can have more than one syllable so they can have both closed and open syllables in them.
