An initiating event is a literary term which refers to the first stimuli in a novel or story that triggers the conflict in the plot of a story line.

Any action or idea that sets the rising action into motion is an initiating event ... An 'Initiating Event' is an event that causes something else to occur. Basically how the conflict first begins
