Saffron is the most expensive spice in the world. It costs more than $6,000 a pound! Luckily, you need just a tiny bit for any dish. Saffron is sold in short, thin strands called "threads." They are dark orange in color and somewhat crispy. When they are put in food, they are usually crushed between the cook's fingers. They color everything a beautiful golden yellow, even the cook's fingers! The highly prized spice has been used for centuries in Egypt and other Middle Eastern countries as a seasoning and a dye. Today, it used in many Spanish foods, such as paella (pa A ya), which is a seafood and rice dish, in soups and even in desserts.
