Read this writing prompt. Write an argumentative essay about whether it is better to tell the truth, even if it will hurt someone's feelings, or to tell a lie to keep from hurting someone. Based on the prompt, which claim is the strongest? One time, I lied to my best friend about going out with another friend because I thought she would be jealous. Why do people feel like they have to lie just because they are afraid that people will get mad at them for telling the truth? It is hard to tell whether someone is telling the truth or lying to you just to protect your feelings. Telling the truth is always the best option, even if someone will be hurt as a consequence.

To be or not to be truthful, that is the question

Many a time we feel trapped and do not know how to proceed to avoid telling people we care about something that might hurt them. Yet, the truth comes out in the end and a lie being discovered causes greater damage.

A dear friend has changed the way he or she looks. Considering the transformation is exagerated and has nothing in common with your friend's personality, you do not like it. You consider telling him or her your views, but after seeing your friend has taken ages in deciding to change, has invested time and money, you end up thinking it is not a good idea. Consequently, you lie, put your best smile and this friend of yours goes out looking ridiculous. After having a bad time with people staring at and laughing at his or her back, your friend calls you to say: you should have warned me. Instead, you lied.

The obvious relult of this we could call a white lie, will certinly be a heartbroken friend who might think you meant to laugh at this amusing sense of fashion. Frienship will no longer feel the same. You added a black spot to it by not being sincere. What is more, telling your friend that this new style did not suit him or her might have made this person soften its effect. Thereby, the absurd moment could have been avoided. Remember, though, that you chose to lie.

As a conclusion, the truth and nothing but the truth could be tough at the moment and bring a little discomfort. At any rate, after some minutes of, let us say indignation, a true friend will recognize you do best when you tell the truth.
