The book "A raisin in the Sun" talks about the life of a black American family that live in the city of Chicago. The story goes way back to the year 1950. The younger family receive a check for a huge amount of money that came from the life insurance of their late father, Mr younger.

Each member of the family has an idea on what to do with the money. Walter Lee tells the whole family that the money should be used to open an alcohol shop where he would sell different types of drinks. His mother and sister objected to this idea saying that the business would not be a profitable one.

His mother wants to use to money to buy a new house which has been their father's dream while his sister Ruth wants to use the money to sponsor herself through medical school.
