In the beginning, modernist writers were mainly reacting to the B. violence of World War I.

Many of the modernist writers were against the war era they were living in - they often wrote about how the war destroys the world around them, and how technology has led to that disastrous time in their lives. They are surrounded by war and modern things, yet they write about emotions and feelings in a different way than their predecessors in literature.
