Ralph realizes that Piggy is of high intelligence, is an effective speaker, and possesses the adult-like ability to "think things through." Ralph's acknowledgment of Piggy as a person of worth, and his wisdom in choosing Piggy as a confidant, is indicative of the quality of his leadership. In Ralph, we are watching a boy become a leader under terrible circumstances.
