What should be the first step in the writing process

The first step in the writing process should be pre-writing, this is the stage in which you prepare to start creating the draft in a number of ways - be it sketching out your characters, research about the setting of the story, defining key themes that you want to return to throughout, or even just establishing fully the genre within which you want to write.
