Texas hadn't been very happy with the way Mexico was governing them, so they went to war with Mexico over their independence. The Mexican general (Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna) eventually surrendered, giving Texas its independence. Almost 10 years later, Texas annexed itself to the United States and became the 28th state.
