In 1951, Lorraine Hansberry moved to New York and joined the black journal Freedom Newspaper. Her first job was to cover the Sojourners of Truth and Justice in Washington D. C., which was a radical protest led by African American women.

As she was against colonialism and imperialism, she wrote in support of the Mau Mau Uprising in Kenya, which was a rebellion from the locals against the British forces.

Her father, Carl Hansberry was a supporter of the Urban League, a non-partisan organization from New York against racial discrimination in the United States. He also was a supporter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
