Read the excerpt from The Iliad of Homer.

But when for the fourth time they had come around to the well springs

then the Father balanced his golden scales, and in them

he set two fateful portions of death, which lays men prostrate,

one for Achilleus, and one for Hektor, breaker of horses,

and balanced it by the middle; and Hektor's death-day was heavier

and dragged downward toward death, and Phoibos Apollo forsook him.

The Greeks believed in many gods because to them the idea of one God was impossible and they also thought that those Gods either brought them blessings or hurt. They also believed that those Gods lived independent lives and could interfere in human affairs. The passage mentions the death and Hades was god of death. They also mention the Greek god Apollo who was considered a God of beauty and archery as well as hunting; he was sometimes mentioned in war, etc.
