There was a lot of tension regarding Chinese migrants to the United States especially on the West Coast, and they were treated largely as second class citizens and subject to intimidation and discrimination. The Chinese migrants first started to come to the United States during the gold rush in 1850. There were push factors for them as well as China had economic problems after the Opium Wars. The result was that the US government restricted naturalization for Chinese born migrants and excluded any new Chinese immigration to the United States in 1882.
