"Animal Farm" is an allegorical novella written by George Orwell as a critique to the Soviet Regime after the Russian Revolution. The pigs were chosen by the author to represent Soviet leaders while the other animals represent the Russian people.

The passage we are studying here predicts the pigs ascension as leaders and the change in their behavior. They are the only animals intelligent enough to be in control of the revolution and its aftermath. The other farm animals have no problem when it comes to following the pigs' decisions and instructions. However, very much like the Soviet leaders did in real life, once in power, the pigs begin to see how they can take advantage of the other animals. The Seven Commandments they once painted on the wall are changed to accommodate the pigs' newly found desires. For instance, the commandment that stated that all animals are equal is changed to "all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others" to justify the pigs comfortable and human-like lifestyle.
