What's the difference between motif and theme

    A motif is a recurring element, such as a symbol or other common item/idea. For instance, if it rains during important events in a story, the rain is a motif.

    A theme is the overarching idea the the piece has a whole encompasses, and is usually the message the author is trying to convey.
