stamina, courage, and a belief in what they are defending. Why is it important to Roosevelt that Americans and members of Congress believe in what they are defending?

    Roosevelt meant that Americans must find the conviction within themselves that what they are defending is the right thing and would be willing to see to its logical conclusion rather than abandoning it on the way.

    This is because, going to war without seeing reasons on why the war is necessary simply means that "they are fighting by armaments alone".
