Which passage from "The Convict and the Bishop" is the best example of irony?

A. He appeared ready either to cleave the bishop's skull or to kiss his hand. In a few moments he raised his left hand slowly to his forehead and took off his cap. The bishop still slept in profoundest peace.

Suddenly Jean Valjean put on his cap, then passed quickly along the bed straight to the cupboard near its head.

B. At last the man quite understood. His face filled with wonder. He began to stutter like a madman.

C. From the looks of fear and distrust, he would have guessed that before long his arrival would be the talk of the whole town. He saw nothing of all this. People with trouble do not look behind.

D. The tavern-keeper then returned to the fire, and laying his hand roughly on the traveler's shoulder said harshly, "You are going to clear out from here."

The stranger turned around and said mildly, "Ah! Do you know?"
