Remember, the theme of a story is the life lesson the author wants you to take away after reading it. In other words: what did you learn about life and how we should live from reading this story? In the example for "Little Red Riding Hood," you found that the theme was "Never speak to strangers." This does not sum up what happened in the story. This statement explains what the story teaches the reader. The theme identifies the author's message.
