Juliet did not want to marry Paris since she was already married to Romeo and was in love with him. She went to Friar Laurence to ask how she could evade the marriage. Friar Laurence suggested to her that she agree to marry Paris, but on the day of her wedding, take a potion which will put her to sleep for a very long time, long enough for everyone to think that she was dead. Friar would send a message to Romeo, telling him about their plans, and then Romeo and Juliet could run away together and happily be married.
