The first danger is the weather. It was abnormally cold when the slaves traveled to Canada. Given the fact that they traveled 10 to 20 miles a day, without any station for rest, the weather conditions would be very dangerous. Needless to say, this kind of weather would also worsen their health and slow the runaways down, as they would lose the strength to walk, which would increase the chances of the hunters catching them. The other danger is that, if caught, the slaves would be whipped or even hanged. The slaves were, therefore, extremely afraid of death.
