    I am not sure about this, but this may mean they are traumatized by the experience, which can cause them either to forget about certain details that their brain chooses to forget, or to altogether not want to recall the horrors of the prison. Without exposure to the outside, they are slowly becoming insane and are confused with no more sense in any form about the world.
