What is the meaning of the word "utmost" as it is used in the following sentence? He tried his utmost to complete the difficult task. "unintelligent" or "aloof" "nervous" or "fearful" "simplest" or "smallest" "greatest" or "hardest"

    Hardest. Just from the dictionary definition, it can only be either greatest or hardest. In the context of effort needed to solve a difficult problem, only "hardest" makes sense.
