In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee describes lives of poor sharecroppers in the 1930s. In this time, money is hard to come by for most people, and many resorts to becoming a sharecropper to make a living. Sharecropping was the result of the abolishment of slavery in southern United States in 1865.
