    The impression that Beowulf is loyal, because he instantly refers to his sovereign, king Hygelac; proud, because he boasts and recounts his heroic deeds and refers to the fame he had earned in his youth, hoping to reaffirm it by killing Grendel; courageous, because he is ready to face the monstrous and bloodthirsty Grendel without any arms.
