    Essentially, the sentence is giving a list of items, some of which have the same position, but some are specifications of other items (so India is a specification of "Bombay").

    In this situation the items are separated by a semicolon and the items and their specifications are separated by a colon:

    Barbara’s parents have lived in Anchorage: Alaska; Bombay:India; and Detroit, Michigan.
