Read the paragraph.

My twin brother Nigel is so mean to me. He found out that I had failed my geometry test and told my mom about it the moment we returned home from school. As my mom informed me that I would be grounded for the next week, Nigel waltzed out of the room with a self-satisfied smirk on his face.

Why is smirk used in the paragraph instead of smile or grin?

Compared to smile or grin, smirk has a more negative connotation that emphasizes Nigel enjoyed causing trouble for his twin.
