Read this excerpt from Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.

What was a pretty blue vase doing way up there? I couldn't reach it, obviously, so I moved over the chair with the tuxedo still on it, and then I went to my room to get the Collected Shakespeare set that Grandma bought for me when she found out that I was going to be Yorick, and I brought those over, four tragedies at a time, until I had a stack that was tall enough.

How does the narration shape Oskar's characterization in this excerpt?

His curiosity renders him extremely childish.

His literary references render him mature for his age.

His dramatic experience suggests great talent.

His plan for retrieving the case suggests great ingenuity.

Answer: The right answer is the B) His literary references render him mature for his age.

Explanation: Just to elaborate a little on the answer, it can be added that the fact that he resorted to his collection of Shakespeare books in order to lift himself up and reach the blue vase indicate that he is mature for his age, since not many children his age are attracted to Shakespeare and know about the characters of his works-Yorick is a character from Hamlet. The excerpt does not suggest that he has had a dramatic experience (although he has had it), and the fact that he is curious about the vase and decides to reach it does not render him childish. In addition, using a book to lift yourself up is pretty common and it does not suggest great ingenuity.

The narrator shapes Orkar's characterizastion in this escerpt of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close as follows: His literary references render him mature for his age.

Normally, a nine-year-old would not have a Collected Shakespeare set in his room. This fact adds to Oskar's character being portrayed as intelligent, eccentric and clever; and Oskar himself self-identifies as many things: an inventor, an origamist, an amateur entomologist and archaeologist, among others.
