Why did john proctor, rebecca, and martha corey choose to hang instead of pleading guilty?

All three of them did not want to betray their friends. They choose to die instead of lying and throwing the rest of their friends under the bus. Basically, they choose to hold fast to their own morals rather than save their own necks and betray people that trusted them.
