In the book "The Republic," Plato compares the act of ascending up out of the cave as the soul rising-up to the intellectual world.

He says that the society is like a ‘cave’ in which the people live like a prisoner following the shadows. The caves also mean the boundaries which we ourselves make within ourselves.
