Read this stanza from "The Rainy Day": My life is cold, and dark, and dreary; It rains, and the wind is never weary; My thoughts still cling to the mouldering Past, But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast, And the days are dark and dreary.     The definition of mouldering is: slow decay/disintegration due to neglect. In this case, I believe it means decaying, as his past is slowly decaying out of memory, yet his thoughts still cling to it even though it is nearly gone.
