Read this paragraph about the British Empire.

(1) The British Empire included colonies, dominions, and other, territories. (2) Eventually, countries like Portugal, Spain France and the Netherlands also established empires overseas. (3) The independence of the American colonies caused Britain to lose some of its oldest, most populous, and most profitable colonies.
