The Man Who Would Be King and the movie with the same name directed by John Huston.

    Explanation:

Rudyard Kipling's "The Man Who Would Be King" was a novel that revolves around the characters of adventurers Daniel Dravot and Peachey Carnehan. They had initially came to India and then moved further to Afghanistan town of Kafiristan. They succeeded to be deemed kings and even worshiped as gods due to their different looks and possession of the Martini - Henry rifles.

They were deemed equal to Alexander the Great but then their facade collapsed when Dravot decided to marry a local Kafir and led to the discovery of their 'human' condition. Through the act of bleeding, Daniel showed the locals that he is indeed human just like them and no different. This led to their downfall. The 1888 story was made into a movie with the same title by director John Huston in 1975, starring Sean Connery as Daniel Dravot and Michael Caine as Peachey Carnehan.
