Answer: In both her biography by Douglas Brinkley and the poem by Rita Dove, the authors emphasize Parks' dignity because that's exactly what African Americans had been robbed off for centuries. Brinkley describes her as "fearless, bold and serene" as she refuses to give in to the driver's demand to give up her seat.
