Verbals are words which are derived from verbs, but don't function as verbs in sentences. There are three types of verbals: gerunds, participles, and infinitives.

In the sentence above, we have three verbals: growing, to convince, and giving. Growing is a participle - its part of speech is adjective. To convince is an infinitive - its part of speech is verb. Giving is a gerund - its part of speech is noun.
