Opinion: Paying student athletes would be a real game changer

Sure, it might motivate student athletes to work harder and strive towards their paychecks, but I see two problems. First - where is the money coming from? It doesn't seem that colleges and universities have much extra that they're willing to share. Second - it could devalue the enjoyment and fun that come from playing a sport. Many people don't want to do it professionally, so monetizing it would take a certain joy out of it.
