At the beginning of henrik Ibsen a dolls house Nora quickly hides the macaroons she's eating from toe als because he has forbidden her from eating them. What do these macaroons symbolize with regard to Nora's relationship with torvald?

    They symbolize her inner resistance to her husband's dominance. She doesn't overtly oppose him yet, but she doesn't give up her own pleasures either.

    Although their marriage seems happy at the beginning, subtle details such as this one indicate that something isn't right. The macaroons can be taken as a symbol of Nora's personality, her inner preferences that she has to hide in a marriage which restricts her, as a woman.
