Nicolai Gogol wrote in matter of fact terms in The Nose to underscore the absurdity of those who scrambled to improve their social rank. Peter the Great allowed people to increase their social rank through service to the state and this story is about a man who lost his nose as it was in pursuit of a better social rank, apparently.
