For me. I would go with "But we don't want to be the laughing stock of this whole town, I reckon, and never hear the last of this thing as long as we live."

I would think this is the answer because even though people might laugh and that. They will not make fun of you for the rest of your lives. But that in this statement they are over-exaggerating.
