Some of the major parallels Krakauer draws are that McCandless was not the only one to die in Alaska. He also mentions Carl McCunn, a man from Texas who was working in an Alaskan pipeline. They went for different reasons, McCandless wanted adventure and he wanted to be on his own, on the other side, McCunn wanted to see the beauty of the place. Both men died Alaska.

For Krakauer, they had similarities, they were confident in their decisions until the end.
