The pit and the pendulum is a "short story" which begins with the narrator being sentenced to death. The story has taken place during the "Spanish inquisition". The story describes that narrator was lying down unconsciously and when he managed to get up he walked but quickly got tired and fell to the ground immediately. The cell he was imprisoned in made him think that he was illuminated. He was freed from the bonds but the judges sentenced him to death.
