The search for knowledge may be vilified or condemned by those in power because those with knowledge are more likely to want more power for themselves. An enlightened human being will want to hold those in power accountable for their action because they understand more about how things should be. The search of knowledge often diverts attention from pursuits that encourage compliance and complacency like watching TV or playing a video game. Reading a book about scientific facts often times flies in the faces of religious teachings. Not only taking time away from religious activities but also opening ones mind to reality.
