This part of the story is a major event because readers realize that Mama wants Maggie to be a traditional woman with little education. The quilts symbolize an old tradition. But in truth, Mama reuses to realize that Maggie would not see the quilts as part of their heritage. She made Maggie believe the quilts are just a simple womanly task.
