I believe Paine appeals more to emotion than to reason.

He is using very loaded words such as tyranny, slavery, crisis, etc. to appeal to his readers' emotions and to persuade them to believe his cause.

The Crisis No. 1 is the first out of 16 pamphlets written during 1776 to 1783 where he is trying to make people realize they need their independence from Britain.
