In 1878, Albert Pope was ready to launch the American bicycle industry with his own Columbia brand of high wheelers. But building bicycles was only half the battle. Pope knew that he also had to build a market by raising the excitement level of the American people for his product. He accomplished this on several fronts, starting with the written word. Pope imported the best cycling articles and pamphlets from England and distributed them to potential customers. He encouraged American author Charles E. Pratt to write The American Bicycler, a handbook for cyclists, and gave away thousands of copies after it was published in 1879.

The correct answer is C) He collected and gave out cycling articles.

The first step Pope took to make people excited about the bicycle was that he collected and gave out cycling articles.

Sue Macy, the author of "Wheels of Change," writes it this way: "Pope imported the best cycling articles and pamphlets from England and distributed them to potential customers. He encouraged American author Charles E. Pratt to write The American Bicycler, a handbook for cyclists ... "

So Pope made a smart move as the clever businessman he was. He knew he had a good and innovative product, but people were unaware of its use. That is why he first thought of informing its potential clients so they could know about the advantages of bicycles in their daily lives. Once informed through the use of brochures and pamphlets, people would demand the new product.
