Read the student sample essay and think about which revisions would make it more effective.

Universal health care is unfair, because it means that everyone has to pay taxes to take care of people who do not even choose to take care of themselves. For example, people make choices about their health, such as whether to smoke. If people choose to smoke, they will have more health problems than people who choose to be healthy.

Which facts, details, or quotations would make this argument stronger? Select all that apply.

-a quotation from the American Lung Association

-a detail about how to stop smoking

-a statistic about how much smoking-related diseases cost the United States last year

-the average adult smoker's health costs

-a statistic about how much money the country would save if all smokers had health care
