    Explanation:

    These young men have been trapped in the war turmoil and immersed in the vicious cycle of death, gore, senselessness, hunger, lice, injustice. At this moment, they are finally having a bit of a break. They caught the goose and are now cooking it - finally, some fresh meat. Paul feels that they have " a more complete communion with one another than even lovers have". Even though they don't know much about each other, they are together in this mess. These feelings grow out of their solidarity with each other.
