Finding ways to dispose of human waste has been a challenge for a long time.

Explanation:

For a long time, humans were trying to find a way to dispose of human waste. China used clay pipes to dump the wastes. In London people had a wooden box and under it was a pit called cesspool to collect the waste.

The waste was called as 'night soil' and was used by the farmers as fertilizers. But the population increased and there was too much of night soil and the farmers too moved into cities for better jobs.

Then came the flush toilets. But the toilets were connected directly to the sewers, which again created a problem.
