the Pope's authority During the Medieval times the Pope had supreme authority over all of Europe. He was respected as the head of church and looked at as having direct communication from God. The thought was so prevalent that any relics the Pope had even touched were revered as being holy, blessed and of God. Most European countries were Catholic and allowed the Pope to guide them religiously, politically and even romantically.
