The canoe breaker by Margaret Bemister is a beautiful text describing how a chap got his name through his deed.

    Explanation:

In this story there was a tribal chap who did not have any name as in their tribal culture name was given according to the task a person does. He tried many things such as he tried to defeat enemies, tried to kill bear, went on hunting trips but alas he failed in each and every activity. As a result his companion used to make fun of him.

Once he went to a trip and the trip became a golden opportunity for him to prove his skills, so he climbed a hill to get a better view of the animals that he wanted to kill. He suddenly observed a creek where the enemies were ready with canoe to attack them. He became afraid and ran fast to inform other members. After informing them he went to place where the enemies were waiting to execute the plan.

He behaved as if he was ill and lied down, the enemies thought that he is going to die that 's why they took him and placed him under a tree. When they went away from that place he ran to the creek and went away to the other shore destroying the canoe and the enemies lost the battle. After that people gave him the name the canoe breaker.
